Philip Lund is an economist and statistician who has spent the early and later parts of his professional career in the North West, being a member of the Manchester Statistical Society in each spell.
After initially living in Saddleworth, he grew up in Stockport, attending Stockport Grammar School. He was a student of the then Faculty of Economic and Social Studies at Manchester University where he obtained a First Class Honours degree. He was then appointed as an Assistant Lecturer (and later Lecturer) in Economic Statistics in the Faculty, where he completed a PhD, and spent a year as a Visiting Lecturer in Economics at the University of Pennsylvania, USA.
He left Manchester to become a government economist, first as an Economic Adviser in the Department of Trade and Industry, where he worked on economic forecasting and regional economics, and then (on promotion) in the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food. After a secondment as Director of Economics, Financial Management and Statistics at the Civil Service College, he returned to the MAFF where he became more involved in statistics, heading the staff responsible for the National Food Survey and the aggregate Economic Accounts for Agriculture.
He opted for early retirement from government service in order to pursue a wider range of professional and other interests. For a number of years he held part-time posts at Harper Adams University College, Shropshire, undertook consultancy work in a number of overseas countries and for UK government departments, was President of the Agricultural Economics Society (1998-99), was a Public Member of Network Rail (2002-07), and was Economic Adviser to the Agricultural Wages Board for England and Wales (2008-09). He is the author (or joint author) of two texts and a wide range of articles in academic economic journals, mostly with a high statistical content.
Outside his professional activities, he enjoys dinghy sailing, hill walking (especially in the Lake District) and travel. |
